Admonition

Mother’s quiet admonition

that little tap on the thigh

while her father-in-law rambles on

demeaning a selfless life

sacrificed in the name

of a possibility

a good family, wonderful kids

and a satisfied husband

I’m flush with anger

but those words don’t come out

the right words

whatever they maybe

to defend something

that shouldn’t need defending

I’m agape, I’m aghast

but what good does

that do for my mother

who only sees shame

in my eyes

and thinks

I’m ashamed of her

So much is lost

in translation.

The voices have stopped

only a sobbing

can be heard

muffled by a pillow

in the shadow of

a bright future

that is your gift, Mother!
