My poems must

My poems

if anything, must be nothing like me

they mustn’t be bulky, ugly or without

words

my poems

must never be egoistic

like me

they could talk about “I”

but never just me

my poems

unlike me

must always think, dream

and talk about her

and every tiny oddity

peculiar to her

maybe but a part of her

yet a part

of something greater

definitely greater than

what I can ever write

or recite

my poems

unlike my memories

must shine in the firmament

and if ruined

then like every broken star

must grant a wish

and disappear

with a flourish

and lovers’ respite.

My poems

if anything

must live

unlike me

unlike you.
