Deer in the dark

snow fell on the road,

yet the concrete was still warm,

when I hugged it, thrown,

through the windshield,

in the space of an eyeblink.

my friend and I separated,

the deer he hit, maimed,

my dying companion,

cried on the broken glass,

tears of blood.
